2025 Jeep Compass gets hybrid, electric powertrains; AWD only on EV

May 7, 2025

Second-generation Jeep Compass

The third-generation Jeep Compass has been officially been revealed in Europe. Sharing underpinnings with the recently unveiled second-generation Citroen C5 Aircross, the new Compass has an evolutionary design, a more upmarket interior and has the option of mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and an all-electric powertrains. This new Compass, however, will not make it to India.

  1. New Compass is based on Stellantis’ STLA Medium platform
  2. Draws design cues from larger Grand Cherokee
  3. Get mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric powertrains

Jeep says the new Compass been engineered to offer superior off-roading capability to position it as “the most capable” SUV in its class.

Third gen Jeep Compass exterior design

Looks more butch and muscular than the second-gen Compass

The third-gen Jeep Compass looks very much like an evolution of the outgoing Compass’ design. The face is characterised by Jeep’s signature 7-slot grille that has been blanked-off and even gets some illuminated at the top. It is flanked by new simple, rectangular LED Matrix headlamps with the DRL signatures positioned at the edges. The front bumper, which slightly varies in design depending on the variant, gets a healthy dose of black plastic cladding and a large centrally-located air intake. There’s also an active grille shutter in the front bumper and air ducts in the front and rear wheel arches to improve aerodynamic efficiency.

Over to the side, the new Compass gets squared-out wheel arches, a very prominent shoulder line and some deep contouring for the doors near the sills. The window-line pinches slightly at the rear three quarters, and the blacked-out roof and pillars contrast well with the body. It also gets new dual-tone, five spoke alloy wheels. The new Compass, perhaps, looks the most attractive from the rear quarter where it gets a contrasting finish for the number plate housing that extends to enclose the tail lamps as well. The two-part tail lamps are connected with a light bar with an illuminated Jeep logo in between.

In terms of dimensions, at 4548mm long, the new Compass is 150mm longer than the previous model. Its 2795mm wheelbase is also a significant 159mm longer, which is said to result in an extra 55mm of leg room in each row.

Speaking to our sister publication Autocar UK, Stellantis’ chief design officer Ralph Gilles said the brief to Compass’ designer was to “make it rugged, make it bolder but, at the same time, detoxify”. To that ends, the new Compass doesn’t feature any chrome – for ecological reasons and “to clean it up a little” – and it is overall a chunkier and more minimalistic proposition than before.

Third gen Jeep Compass interior and features

More upmarket and techy

The interior sees an equally comprehensive update with a large 16.0-inch touchscreen taking the centre stage on the dashboard. There’s also a deep-set 10.-inch digital instrument cluster, both of which are standard fitment on all variants of the Compass. Below the central touchscreen is an array of touch-based control, there are new slim AC vents at either edges and a rather neat centre console with a rotary dial and a chunky red button for the terrain modes. It also uses a healthy dose of aluminium and wooden inserts on the dashboard that up the premium quotient.

In terms of equipment, the new Compass gets a panoramic sunroof, a wireless charger in between the front seats, head-up display, connected car tech and over-the-air (OTA) updates. Jeep says the new Compass is more spacious and practical than the outgoing model.

Third gen Jeep Compass platform and powertrain

Two hybrids and an all-electric powertrain

The new Compass sits on parent brand Stellantis’ STLA Medium platform. It carries over the same hybrid and electric powertrain options we saw on the new Citroen C5 Aircross. So, the range starts with a 145hp, 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that’s coupled a small 0.9kWh battery and 48V mild-hybrid tech. Then there’s the PHEV which uses a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine in tandem with a 125hp electric motor for a combined 195hp, and has a 21kWh battery.

Meanwhile, the all-electric Compass gets two battery pack options – 73kWh and 97kWh. The former gets a 213hp front-axle mounted electric motor for a claimed range of 500km, while the latter uses a 233km front-axle motor and returns 650km of range (WLTP cycle). Lastly, all-wheel drive (4xe) can only be had on the electric Compass, which adds a 179hp and 232Nm electric motor on the rear axle, taking total power output to 375hp.

Third gen Jeep Compass offroad statistics

Electric version is the most focused at off-roading

The new Compass has a raised suspension over its Stellantis platform-mates to give it up to 200mm of ground clearance and a maximum wading depth of 470mm. It also has shortened overhangs at each end, giving an approach angle of 20-degree, a breakover angle of 15-degree and a departure angle of 26-degree. All variants also get a suite of drive modes for different types of terrain. In keeping with the 4xe’s more extreme billing, it has an additional 10mm suspension lift to boost ground clearance and give 27-degree approach, 16-deg breakover and 31-deg departure angles.

Third gen Jeep Compass India launch plans

As we have reported previously, the next-gen Compass will not come to India. Sources tell us that the new STLA Medium platform failed to meet the commercial viability for the Indian market, forcing Stellantis to cancel it. Given that the existing Compass sells in just three digits on a monthly basis, the involved expense did not justify the expected volumes. Meanwhile, the new Compass is already available to order in Europe and deliveries will begin in the fourth quarter of 2025. It will be manufactured at Stellantis’ Melfi plant in Italy.
