The Indian scooter industry has achieved record wholesales of 68.53 lakh units in the financial year that ended on March 31, 2025 (FY2025), a 17 percent year-on-year (YoY) increase. What helped drive the numbers was manufacturers rolling out refreshed and new models, revival of demand from rural and semi-urban regions and strong electric-scooter sales.

General overview of the scooter market in FY2025

Indian scooter market records its best ever sales since FY2018

While Honda Activa remains the market leader with a 42 percent share, TVS follows with an increase in its pie to 26 percent. Bajaj Auto doubled its share to 4 percent even as Yamaha and Ather Energy registered strong sales. Electric two-wheelers, with over 7.73 lakh units, comprised 11 percent of the overall scooter sales.

The Indian scooter market’s previous best fiscal year was FY2018, with 67.1 lakh units sold. FY2025 sales have exceeded that by over 1.33 lakh units, averaging over 5.71 lakh units a month, which translates to well over 18,500 scooters per day.

The industry hit a monthly high of over 7.21 lakh units in the festive season (October); it surpassed 6 lakh units in August and September and over 5 lakh units eight times. The lowest monthly sales were in December – 4.18 lakh units, as buyers prefer to defer their purchase decisions to the next year.
