January 19, 2025
The Hyundai Ioniq 9 electric SUV is being showcased for the first time in India at the Auto Expo 2025 in New Delhi. The three-row, born-electric SUV is Hyundai’s flagship product for its born-EV line-up, which includes models like the Ioniq 5 and the Ioniq 6.
- Ioniq 9 gets Long Range, performance variants
- It has swivelling seats for the second row
- Rivals the Tesla Model X and Kia EV9 internationally
Hyundai Ioniq 9 is the brand’s biggest EV
The Ioniq 9 is based on the modular E-GMP skateboard platform, which also underpins the Kia EV6, Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 and Kia EV9. With a length of 5,060mm, the Ioniq 9 is Hyundai’s largest electric SUV and is 45mm longer than the EV9. Despite the size, the Ioniq 9 has a swoopy design, with a rounded front end and an upright tailgate. The LED headlights feature what Hyundai calls Parametric Pixels, also seen in the Ioniq 5, though in a slimmer avatar.
The Ioniq 9 also gets combination tail-lights and 19-inch wheels as standard. The flared wheel arches on the side add some muscle to the SUV. Customers can choose from 16 exterior colours and seven interior options.
Hyundai Ioniq 9 seating layout, safety features
The Ioniq 9 is available in 6- and 7-seater layouts. The first two rows have massaging seats, and the second row can swivel and face the third row when the car is stationary. Besides a panoramic sunroof, features include a ‘panoramic curved display’ comprising a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting, roof-mounted air vents, multi-zone climate control, 100W USB-C ports in all three rows and an 8-speaker sound system.
Being a born-EV, the Ioniq 9 gets an open centre console area with plenty of smart storage spaces. Below the main screen, there’s also a neat band of controls for HVAC and other operations, and the AC vents are nicely concealed in the band that stretches the dashboard’s width.
Hyundai Ioniq 9 battery, powertrain highlights
The Ioniq 9 has a 110.3 kWh battery pack with a projected WLTP range of up to 620km. With a 350kW charger, it is capable of charging from 10 percent to 80 percent in 24 minutes. It has 400V and 800V charging capabilities and a vehicle-to-load (V2L) feature that allows one to use the SUV to charge other electrical items.
There are two variants: Long Range (LR) and Performance. The Ioniq 9 LR has a rear-wheel-drive configuration with 218hp and 350Nm. The LR AWD adds a 95hp, 255Nm motor at the front. The top-of-the-line Ioniq 9 Performance gets the 218hp motor on both front and rear axles.
In its most powerful avatar, the Ioniq 9 can sprint from 0-100kph in a claimed 5.2 seconds and has a top speed of 200kph. The Ioniq 9 also gets dynamic torque vectoring, lateral wind stability control and a rough-road package called Terrain Traction Control. It features an Auto Terrain Mode that is said to use artificial intelligence to gauge the road surface.
Hyundai Ioniq 9 India launch details
Hyundai is showing the Ioniq 9 to the Indian audience just as a halo model. Kia already has the EV9 on sale in India, and we have been told there are no talks of the Ioniq 9 going on sale in the country anytime soon.
Besides the Ioniq 9, Hyundai has displayed the Creta Electric, which launched at Rs 17.99 lakh at the ongoing expo. The Korean brand also has the Staria MPV and the Creta 1.0 turbo-petrol at the show.
