Land Rover Defender lineup rejigged in India

The Land Rover Defender line-up in India now has just two engine options across seven variants – the V8 and PHEV powertrains are no longer available. The Defender, however, continues to be on sale in all its three body styles – 90, 110 and 130.

Prices for the Land Rover Defender now range from Rs 1.04 crore to Rs 1.57 crore. Before this update, it cost between Rs 92.70 lakh and Rs 2.85 crore, ex-showroom.

The Defender was available with as many as 5 engine options: a 2.0-litre petrol, a 3.0-litre petrol, a 3.0-litre diesel, a 5.0-litre V8 and even a 2.0-litre plug-in hybrid. Of these, only the 2.0-litre petrol and the 3.0-litre diesel engines remain on sale.

The 2.0-litre petrol engine is now available only in the 110 body style in X-Dynamic HSE trim, making it the sole petrol variant on offer. The 3.0-litre diesel engine, on the other hand, is offered across all three body styles and in three trims: X-Dynamic HSE, X, and Sedona Edition.

This rejig naturally raises the base price of the Defender as the 2.0-litre petrol is no longer offered on the base 90 body style. It also massively brings down the top-end price with the V8 now gone. Do note that the recently introduced Defender Octa V8 is still available to order, but only within its limited allocation for India.

Our dealer sources say that only the most popular engines have been kept on sale to rationalise the lineup. The Defender continues to be a fully imported vehicle, unlike the flagship Range Rover and Range Rover Sport which were recently localised. In other news, Land Rover has also commenced deliveries of the locally assembled Range Rover Sport from today.
