Mahindra to launch electric Bolero, Scorpio

Further to Mahindra executive director and CEO (Auto and Farm Sector) Rajesh Jejurikar stating that ‘all ICE brands would be electrified over time‘, the company reiterated at its investor presentation today that it plans toĀ electrify the Bolero and Scorpio. Like its petrol-to-electric siblings ā€“ the XUV.e and the Thar.e ā€“ the models will take on the ā€˜.eā€™ suffix. While not much is known about the Mahindra Scorpio.e and Bolero.e, the EVs are unlikely to use a ladder-frame chassis due to the challenges associated with making a born-EV with that platform.

In addition, Mahindra had showcased the Thar.e concept last August, which had a modified version of Mahindraā€™s INGLO (INdia GLObal) skateboard platform, codenamed P1. The platform is said to have a wheelbase that will be between 2,775mm and 2,975mm, and may be used on the all-electric Scorpio and Bolero. For perspective, the current-gen Bolero has a 2,680mm-long wheelbase, while the Scorpio N has 2,750mm between the wheels.

Like Mahindraā€™s other EVs, the two new models may also share their battery packs and motors. The Thar.e concept showcased had a 109hp/135Nm front and a 286hp/535Nm rear motor, giving it AWD capability. The battery specifications werenā€™t revealed at the time, but the brand had said that the platform would likely have a 60kWh or an 80kWh pack, with the former giving about 325km of WLTP range, and the latter going about 435-450km.

Timelines for the launch of the Scorpio.e and Bolero.e are unknown, but Mahindra had announced it would bring out seven new EVs by 2030, and the Scorpio and Bolero electrics may be among them.

Next-gen Mahindra Bolero expected in 2026

As reported by us earlier, the Bolero diesel is also being readied for a complete overhaul. The company is readying to introduce a next-generation ladder-frame architecture called U171, which will underpin a number of new SUVs and pickup trucks. The first model, most likely the next-gen Bolero, is expected by 2026-27. There are likely to be at least three SUVs on the platform, which could bring Mahindra annual volumes of about 1.5 lakh units. Once the pickup range also transitions to this platform, the volume potential could eventually double.
