New Bajaj Chetak Urbane to get smaller battery, 113km range
December 2, 2023
A new government document has revealed to us that a simpler and most likely, more affordable Bajaj Chetak variant is in the works. This variant will be called the Chetak Urbane and will sit below the Chetak Premium that’s on sale currently.
- Chetak Urbane has smaller battery, lesser range
- Will look similar to the Chetak Premium variant
The most noteworthy change on the Chetak Urbane is the presence of a slightly smaller 2.48kWh battery pack, down from the Premium’s 2.88kWh unit. This has impacted the claimed IDC range, which now stands at 113km, down from the 126km figure of the Premium.
Body dimensions are identical on both the Premium and the Urbane which means that visual differences will be quite limited between the two. However, the Urbane is 3kg lighter than the Premium, which should put its kerb weight figure at 130kg. That number seems to be on the higher side for an e-scooter but in the real world you don’t feel that impact the riding experience.
A while ago, a Chetak EV with a hub-mounted motor was spied testing and this new Urbane variant could possibly be that scooter. Recently, Bajaj announced a big discount for the Chetak, and at Rs 1.30 lakh (ex-showroom), it is among the most affordable of the high-quality, made-in-India e-scooters. With ever-changing EV subsidies, it remains to be seen how Bajaj prices the more affordable Chetak Urbane when it finally goes on sale.
